Faux locs

Faux locs are extensions wrapped around braided or twisted natural hair to mimic the look of real locs. They're temporary — taken out after 6–8 weeks — and they protect your natural hair while they're in. They're a great option if you love the loc aesthetic but aren't ready to commit, or if you want to try the look before making a permanent decision.

They're also a popular choice for special occasions, photoshoots, or season-specific styling. Because they're extensions, you can choose length, thickness, and even colour without any long-term consequences.

The install takes several hours and the style is heavier than braids, so comfort is worth discussing before you commit to a specific length and size.

Real locs

Real locs are your natural hair intentionally matted and formed over time. The process starts with a foundational technique — coils, two-strand twists, interlocking — and then the locs form and tighten over months and years.

The commitment is the point for many people. Real locs are a journey, and the way they look at year one versus year five is completely different. They require a specific maintenance routine, regular retwisting, and patience during the early stages when they may look less defined.

Taking out real locs is possible but difficult and often results in significant hair loss. It's not a decision to make lightly.

The question to ask yourself

Do you love the look, or do you love the loc lifestyle? If it's mainly the look, faux locs give you exactly that with no strings attached. If you want the lifestyle — the commitment, the journey, the identity — then real locs are the answer.
