One of the most common misconceptions about protective styles is that once the braids are in, you can leave your scalp alone. The opposite is true. Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp, and a neglected scalp under braids or locs is one of the fastest ways to undo the benefits of a protective style.
Keep the scalp moisturised
Dry scalp leads to itching, flaking, and slowed hair growth. A lightweight scalp oil or scalp serum applied along the parts 2–3 times a week is the minimum. Avoid heavy butters or petroleum-based products that sit on the scalp and attract lint and buildup.
Tea tree oil mixed with a carrier oil is a popular option for clients prone to itching — it has mild antimicrobial properties that help keep the scalp environment balanced without clogging anything.
Don't neglect the scalp between washes
If your scalp is feeling oily or irritated between wash days, a diluted witch hazel spray applied with a cotton pad along the parts helps without disrupting the style or causing frizz.
Sleeping in a satin bonnet is not optional
Friction from a cotton pillowcase pulls moisture out of both the hair and the scalp and causes frizz on the braids. A satin bonnet or satin pillowcase is the most cost-effective thing you can do to extend the life of your style and protect your hair while you sleep.
Signs your scalp needs attention
- Persistent itching that doesn't respond to oil
- Visible flaking or buildup at the roots
- Tenderness or pain at the root
- An unusual smell from the hair
Any of these are worth addressing sooner rather than later. Book a scalp treatment or come in for a consultation if your scalp is consistently uncomfortable under your style.
