The answer most people want is a specific number of weeks, and the honest answer is: it depends. But here's how to figure out the right schedule for your hair.
The general guideline
Most braided styles — box braids, cornrows, knotless braids — should be refreshed or taken out between 4 and 8 weeks after installation. That's a four-week window, which is wide, and the right time for you depends on several things.
Factors that affect your timeline
- Hair growth rate: Fast growers will see more root growth sooner, which can make braids look less neat and put more tension on the attachment point as the natural hair grows away from the braid.
- Activity level: If you're exercising regularly, swimming, or doing anything that involves a lot of sweat, your braids will need attention sooner. Moisture and sweat break down the neat finish of a braid and can cause buildup at the scalp.
- Maintenance routine: Clients who sleep with a satin bonnet, oil their scalp regularly, and handle their braids gently will comfortably get to 8 weeks. Clients who skip these steps often find 4–5 weeks is the limit before things start to look tired.
- Extension type: Human hair extensions tend to hold their finish longer than synthetic. Knotless braids often look neater for longer than traditional braids because there's less tension at the root from the start.
Signs you've left them in too long
- Significant new growth at the roots that's tangling or matting
- Buildup on the scalp that you can't clean out properly
- Braids that are starting to thin or unravel at the ends
- Itching or discomfort that isn't relieved by scalp oil
Leaving braids in past the point of no return doesn't protect your hair — it risks it. Matting and tangling at the roots during take-down is one of the main causes of unnecessary hair loss.
My advice
Book your take-down when you book your installation. Decide on a 6-week window, put it in your calendar, and stick to it. Your hair is healthier for it, and your next install will go smoother because your natural hair is in better condition.
