Classic straight-back cornrows

The standard — clean sections braided straight back from the forehead to the nape. These are the foundation. They're neat, they last well, and they're one of the best bases for protective styling because you can wear a wig or headwrap over them and protect your hair completely.

Timing: typically 1–2 hours depending on hair thickness and how many rows you want.

Feed-in cornrows

Feed-in cornrows incorporate extension hair gradually as the braid progresses, creating a more natural look at the root without a visible knot or bulk at the beginning of each braid. They sit flatter against the scalp than traditional cornrows with extensions and are popular for clients who want length added without the cornrow looking heavy at the hairline.

Geometric and custom designs

This is where cornrows become art. Curved patterns, zig-zags, swirl designs, and custom partings are all possible. These styles take longer — typically 3–5 hours — and require a stylist with experience in design work. Bring reference images if you have a specific pattern in mind.

How long do cornrows last?

Simple cornrows without extensions last 1–2 weeks before new growth makes them look less neat. Cornrows with extensions can last 4–6 weeks with proper care — sleeping in a satin bonnet, keeping the scalp moisturised, and avoiding excessive moisture at the roots.
